how to be a dad.....almost there

how to be a dad.....almost there

Apparently my sperm deformity was caused by antihistamine, which I regularly take so my allergies won’t kick in. Her OB-GYNE prescribed colostrum capsules to help boost my immunity from allergens. Colostrum by the way is also what they call the first milk from a mother’s breast, which is very high in antibodies to boost babies’ immunity against illnesses. The capsules were quite expensive, so I searched for lactating mothers willing to donate some of their colostrum…of course I am kidding, otherwise I would be here writing this blog. Hehe! I stopped taking antihistamine and after a few months of waiting, we’re good to go!

Becoming a dad was a lot more complicated than I expected! I’ve always thought that you’d just have to have sex during her fertile period, and then…jackpot!

how to be a dad - still getting there...

how to be a dad - still getting there...

I, on the other hand, was diagnosed with deformed sperm. I forgot what the medical term was but I googled it up, and it meant something like deformed monster sperm. Scary! Never thought those little guys were real monsters! It was also the first time I heard of a masturbatorium. Her doctor sent me to a clinic where I can have my sperm analyzed. This clinic had a mastubatorium which is a small, clean room where you, as the room implies, masturbate, to extract sperm specimen. It had a toilet, lavatory, a small couch and a screen where they show porn movies. I told my wife I’d like to stay in the room for one and a half hour, so I could finish the movie….I wish! Haha!

how to be a dad - getting there

how to be a dad - getting there

My wife and I had certain conditions that didn’t allow us to have a baby immediately. We found this out after consulting with her OB-GYNE. Aside from that, my wife was already 33 years old then, our OB said we better hurry up since its gonna be harder and riskier to have a baby when she gets older.

We went to the OB’s clinic for our first diagnosis. The doctor told us that my wife had high sugar levels in her blood and insulin imbalance, all caused by her glucose intolerance. How in the world does sugar prevent pregnancy?! Well, this is how I understood it. Glucose, which is the form of sugar our body needs to have energy, is absorbed by the body with the help of insulin, a hormone naturally produced by our pancreas. Since her body cannot absorb glucose well, her body pumps up more insulin so glucose can be absorbed. The problem is that the surge of insulin causes imbalance in the other hormones that makes ovulation regular. So even if she has her monthly period, it doesn’t always mean that she ovulates right after. She had to take blood sugar tests and metformin for months to correct the imbalance. Pretty complicated but at least that’s one problem solved.

How to be a DAD - my parenting experience

How to be a DAD - my parenting experience

Being a parent, a dad to be exact, as I just learned, is one of the world’s most challenging tasks. Its just as tough as a mother’s. The attention and effort it demands from you just sucks away your energy. From the time you wake up (if you were able to sleep the whole night that is…) its all systems go!....You change the diapers, feed him, burp ‘em, let ‘em get some early morning sunshine (babies love this!), feed him, burp ‘em, give him a bath, play with ‘em, feed ‘em, burp ‘em, then rock and sing them to sleep….THEN you can brush your teeth and have breakfast…this goes on and on till the evening. At the end of a looooooong day, all you want to do is crash. And did I mention that babies still can’t distinguish night from day? So for the first few weeks, they are usually awake at night. Your daily routine continues at night till the wee hours in the morning. This goes on for days and weeks….sounds tiring? I’m talking from my experience as a dad with a son who is barely two months old! Whew!

But, I also discovered that being a dad is also one of the most rewarding piece of work anyone can ever have. Just seeing your baby smile and play with you is enough to get you going….so when I ask myself…IS BEING A DAD HARD? NAH!!! (well… sometimes still, hehe!)
